Theory and application of automaton

Akira Imada, Professor
Intelligent Information Technologies Department, BrSTU

Starting with once very popular algorithm called Conway's 'Life Game,' we study in this course what is 'automaton,' how it works and what for. Conway's 'Life Game' was proposed when modern PC began to appear in our home as a desktop computer. As such, the algorithm was really simple but kept points on the screen moving, and the movement was very fascinating to observe. Automaton is, thus, an algorithm which creates an autonomous behavior without a human intervention . The second we will study is 'Cell Automaton' in which, we can also enjoy observing how state of cells will keep changing autonomously. Then we proceed to what we call a 'Finite State Automaton.' After learning what is this, we study practical application of this to such as robot navigation, or creation of sentences in natural language. Outcome of this Finite  State Automaton is deterministic. Then we expand it by introducing stochastic procedure to make behaviors non-deterministic. This might be called Hidden Markov Process. Finally, we study the relationship between automaton and formal language, since automaton is also an important tool to create/analyze formal language. For example, to create a compiler like C-language. If we have still time, we will also try a music generation by automaton.
