Pattern Recognition

Akira Imada, Professor
Intelligent Information Technologies Department, BrSTU

When we classify patterns we use features of the patterns. Starting with a simple classification with one feature, we expand it to classification with two, three, or more, that is, with multiple features. We will study Bayesian Classification, which is said to be the most successful tool among others for classification. We learn a famous formula of probability proposed by Bayes. Then we apply it for pattern classification, mainly assuming patterns' Gaussian probability distribution. For this purpose, we learn multidimensional Gaussian distribution function, too. We also learn what we call a 'Bayesian Network' for classification. Unfortunately, however, this Bayesian classification is computationally very expensive. So, we also study the methods with less complexity like 'Nearest Neighbor Classification.'
