Results of the International Scientific Conference

On October 22 – 23 Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej (Poland) hosted the International Scientific Conference "Reading and Writing Skills in the Educational Environment: Theory and Practice", which was held jointly with Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie under the patronage of prof. Jozef Berger, Rector of Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej.

More than 50 people from different European universities attended the conference. The purpose of the conference was achieved, since the discussion forum was held at a high scientific level and was devoted to the actual problem of developing reading and writing skills in the light of new theories and results of empirical research. The wide problem field of the conference allowed to discuss issues of modern education in the world and presented problems related to teaching reading and writing skills at different stages of education in a single and multilingual environment, with particular emphasis on teaching a second / foreign language.

Here are some themes discussed:

  • Teaching reading and writing in the context of modern education monolingual, bilingual and multilingual
  • Traditional and innovative in teaching reading and writing
  • Models of reading and writing process of in the first and second languages: implications for learning
  • Linguistic basis for the development of reading and writing skills (the role of phonology, grammar, vocabulary, discourse)
  • The interdependence of reading and writing skills in the learning process and in educational practice
  • The role of reading in mediator language (translation, presentation, paraphrase)
  • Teaching reading - reading skills in primary education, reading programmes at the early school stage 
  • Reading and writing in youth education
  • The value of the ability to read and write for academic and professional development
  • Usage of literary and cultural texts in teaching reading and writing
  • Elements of reading and writing in the classes of the native language and a foreign language: activity, strategy, evaluation of reading and writing in the process of learning the native and foreign languages
  • Usage of printed and online materials in teaching reading
  • The educational value of extensive reading and reading for fun
  • Motivation, interest, commitment and attitude to improve reading and writing skills
  • Linguistic identity of people reading and writing in a monolingual, bilingual and multilingual environment
  • Specific difficulties in the development of reading and writing skills (dyslexia, dysography, dysorthosis)

During the conference a scientific and practical goal was also achieved - to ensure the exchange of experience of scientific and teaching staff, theorists and practitioners interested in learning the process of learning and developing literacy in terms of various disciplines and approaches, such as: teaching native and second languages, linguistics, psycholinguistics , psychology, pedagogy or didactics of foreign languages.

The reports of professors-anglicists were received with great interest: Catherine Wallace (University of London), Emilia di Martino (Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples), Elzbety Avramyuk (Uniwersytet w Białymstoku), Maria Dakovska (Uniwersytet Warszawski), I-gry, (Greece, Uniwersytet wziawtstet w Białymstoku), Maria Dakowska (Uniwersytet wz zawski i uniwersytet w Białymstoku), Maria Dakowska (Uniwersytet wz zawski i unhawies), Maria Gyłowski (Uniwersytet wz uneswtete w Białymstoku) Uniwersytet im. Marii Curie- Skłodowskiej, Lublin), associate professor Linda Saunders (St. Mary’s University, Twickenham London), associate professor Martin Smolik (Centralna Komisja Egzaminacyjna, Warszawa) and others. There were four sections, including the section of Russian scientists, which was presented by the Moscow professor Maria Ossovskoy, who offered a workshop of oral speech - the experience of the drama school, professor M, P.Zhigalova, who acquainted the European public with the technology of teaching inductive reading of a work of art, as well as performances of the Polish doctor of humanities Y.E. Khodyniuk, professor, doctor of psychological sciences from Chisinau (Moldova) and teacher of the Pinsk industrial-pedagogical college (branch of BrSTU) E V. Statkevich and others.

An exchange of views, an active discussion after each performance, in which not only scholars and teachers took part, allowed the students to bring the problem of reading and writing to a new level of understanding, to show its role and importance in the real and virtual world, to outline the prospects for its development.

The conference expanded the range of scientific knowledge and creative interaction of scientists, pointed out ways for further scientific cooperation of humanities in Western and Eastern Europe.

2nd International Conference on Current Research Problems of Materials, Structures, Technologies and Organization of Civil Engineering in Cross-Border Approach will be held in BrSTU

The English for Specific Purposes Training took place in BrSTU on May, 12th-13th, 2016.

The Training was held under the Erasmus+ Project “Library Network Support Services (LNSS): modernising libraries in Armenia, Moldova and Belarus through library staff development and reforming library services”.

DAAD invites applications for a summer school in Essen

The summer school, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)  will start with visits to European Institutions in  Strasburg, followed by llectures and presentations in Essen and last from 22.08. - 31.08.2016.

Application deadline: 05.02.2016.

Working language is English.
